American designer Paul Loebach has created a cool table called Watson. This elegant table will be exhibited during Milan Design Week 2011 together with three other projects from the collection called “Some recent experiments” and owned by the same designer. The Watson Table has taken its name from scientist James Watson, who is known for finding the helical structure of DNA. The shape is inspired by English furniture of the late 1600?s, with its distinctive open wood turnings, sometimes called ‘barley twists’. The designer was interested in translating these twisting shapes into bold structural elements, for the aim of experimenting with new combinations of materials and construction processes. The Watson Table is made from a wood and carbon composite. This table utilizes the inherent stiffness of carbon as a structural core, making a symbolic composition of maximum strength with minimal materials. [Via]
