A light fitting called Wax Lamp designed by HASSELL, created wholly of beeswax and wick, and has been awarded first prize LightCycle Sustainable Light Future Design Competition in the 2011. Organized by architectural lighting firm Electrolight as part of the 2011 State of Design Festival in Melbourne, the competition asked designers to explore principles of environmental sustainability in their creation of a light fixture for a high-efficiency LED bulb. Through Wax lamp, the HASSELL design team wanted to focus on the product’s life cycle and its relation to our ecosystems, than just focusing on carbon consumption.
The lamp composed of a block of bees wax with a hole where the bulb lies. LED light bulbs don’t heat up like a traditional light bulb, which means bees wax can be introduced as a material for the light fitting. [Via]

Design studio Inveno was founded by René Šulc and one of his creation is octopus lamp for EXX Stone. The concept of floor and table lamps Octopus was the ability of living organisms to give light. This process is called bioluminescence. The ability to give light to these organisms is very useful and important. They use it mainly for protection from enemies, or contrary to lure prey or to communicate. Lamp shape also presents all the possibilities of Corian process – bending, forming in three directions, backlight, particle processing. Another motivation came from the known properties of some species of octopus change color, which seems very possible for the lamp, which then offers the possibility of tuning the color mood of the interior. This is achieved through the lamp LED with programmable RGB mixer. [Via]
