Morris Partnership has designed Richmond House in 13 Sherwood Street, Richmond, Melbourne VIC 3121.
Responding to brave the challenges of a tight inner-city site, this home serves a sanctuary in the middle of traffic and the intensity of the surrounding environment. The interior is private, quiet and visually appealing. The exterior is firm in its presence without being dominating, and contributes to the vitality and attractiveness of the street.
The front façade is incised to serve a protected entry and allows views of the Victorian cottage adjacent. Large screens hamper views into the house, and rooms turn around protective courtyards and decks. Lush gardens doused with tanks in place that has been established.
An adjacent peppercorn tree forms a protective veil. A stacked stone wall along the entrance path hides rainwater tanks for the gardens and also holds grasses and orchids.
The house form is simple and rectilinear and makes spaces which stream into each other. Soft material palette is deliberately holding, relying on layering and transparency to make a sense of elusiveness. External finishes come through the building and are highlighted by the selective use of interior colors and finishes. [Via]
